Mission

To reduce oral health disparities in central Iowa.

 

Vital Statistics

Des Moines Health Center has been operational since 1919.

Patient/Client Visits

Total number of dental visits per year14,045

(Visits are defined as face-to-face encounters with a primary care service provider.)

User Characteristics (based on number of users)

Total number of General Community clients served – 7,352

Total number of Homeless clients served – 7,834 (school smiles and mobile dental clinic)

Dental Programs
·          Comprehensive general dental care
·         
Specialty care provided by a pediatric dentist
·         
Orthodontia program – Volunteer program in cooperation with area orthodontist providing complete ortho care for children
·         
Orthondontia consultation program – Volunteer program with area orthodontists to provide consultation and treatment
·         School Smile Program (a school based oral health promotion/disease prevention program) includes three projects:

1.       Healthy Smile Project – Core services – oral health education, screenings, and referrals.

2.       Dental Sealant Project – Provides core services plus dental exams, sealant retention checks, and dental sealants.

3.       Little Healthy Smiles – A fluoride varnish project.  Provides oral health education, screenings, referrals, and two fluoride varnish applications to children in preschools and Head Start programs.

·         A mobile dental clinic van program (Smile Squad Mobile Dental Clinic) providing dental care at elementary schools established in the spring of 2003

 

Des Moines Health Center is not a federally qualified health center; therefore, they are not required to submit information to the U.S. Bureau of Primary Health Care Uniform Data System.
